New Laptop possibly?

im trying to get a new desktop, but while looking around i had a thought about portability, so i decided to look at laptops too, and checked around this forum, and in 1 i found this : "HP DV4000" the guy who recomended it to another said it could handle games like WoW and such, and i was wondering maybe that would work for me too?

I would recommend a laptop too. The world is shifting towards portable computing and portable gaming. Notebooks are getting more powerful and more affordable too. As for the HP DV4000, well if you get the one with the ATI x700 video card, then yes, it'll play WoW without any problems. It'll also handle the likes of Doom3, HL2, Quake4, and WoW at high settings.

The downside to using a notebook is you can not make much in the way of hardware changes. The largest economical HD is in the range of 80 -120 gig

( right there that would not do for me) With my games, music, programs I have 2 300gig SATA drives almost full. I do hava a lot of customers that use a notebook with a docking station , with an external LCD monitor , usb KB and mouse. Then they just pop the notebook off of the dock station and off they go. I guess in my life I just do not see the need for a notebook , I have and like all my desktop pc's spread out through the house, well I just have one notebook, it is a AMD 1.7 GIG athalon XP , I basically use it for my OBDII car scanner

There are lots of powerful laptops out there, some that are just as capable as many desktops when it comes to gamming. The only problem with any laptop is the same problem some desktops have, HEAT. Cramming such powerful hardware in a tiny case, there's no way for it to cool down. Well, not without some exessivly noisy fan or some performace loss to keep the heat down.

Plus, you'll never get the same performace you get with a desktop, there's just no way. First off, laptop's run off much less power. Next, the smaller harddrives are slower. Oh, and if you do get a faster HD(as in more RPMs) they drain the battery faster! Then, you're limited to upgrades. Many can't be upgraded...well, at all.

hmm, so now ive got a mixed opinion....



ive seen my friends alienware laptop, and yes, it does get unaturally warm, but it seemed to be able to run WoW and counterstrike through an entire night....



im looking at desktops too, but the, besides being bigger, seem mroe upgradable, most people agree tho, that i shouldnt buy one, i should assemble it myself after buying parts, which i might do, but im worried i might break something

Well you'll have to ask yourself what you want to use your computer for. Also if mobility is a factor for you. For some, they'd want extreme power and don't mind being stationary. As for me, I like the freedom and my system's got enough power for all my needs. My rig's got enough power to handle any game at full settings- so I'm happy. I also take it to work, grandparent's house, friends house, girlfriends house... game where ever I feel like it... even the toilet.

As for heat, laptops and desktops will generate heat, fans will kick on to dispurse it. It's a normal thing, its just that the desktop isnt sitting infront of your face. For gaming hardware, the laptops are stuck at 7800 gpu's right now, but you'll be seeing more trickling its way out soon. ATI's x1600 is already out now also. But the major question is in the first section- do you need/want mobility? If not, then a desktop is better for you.

well, portability is one of my major factors, but its going side-by-side with the price ratio and if it can run what i would like it too



some people have recomended a "cube" by alienware, which looks small, and could be semi-portable, but not like a laptop, but it could help non-the-less
