hey all,
would be grateful for your advice here; are laptops designed to be left on over long periods of time? i have a desktop pc which stays on pretty much all day every day and just switch off at night, but just got a new dell laptop and was wondering if its ok to leave it on all the time (provided you are working on AC power) coz it seems to get reeeeally hot underneath lol so just thought id check. and also will it damage the battery in any way??

it doesn't matter if you leave either a laptop or a desktop pc on nonstop. The only bad thing it does is make the electricity bill increase.

Well after you run it for a while windows will become unstable and will want you to reboot it...but that is just windows and has nothing to do with the computer.

i also have a dell inspiron 8200 laptop, and it heats up like hell. i recon that it is ok for a laptop to stay on for long peroids of time, and it wouldn't affect the battery because it wouldn't really be inuse if you r using an ac adapter. After i finish playing dawn of war on my laptop, it gets really hot underneath too. Does ur adapter get reaaaally hot too?

am i the only person over the age of 15 here ?! lol no offence... anyhwho according to someone else:
Generally laptops don't have the best cooling and therefore aren't really meant for extended use. All those components so tightly packed are going to generate heat, even when you have it in suspended mode. Excessive heat over time could potentially cause a hardware failure of some sort.
Maybe if you leave it on but keep it elevated off any flat surfaces you could maintain some airflow on the outside of the casing at least
not sure how reliable that information is *shrugs*

Well I have a Compaq Armada e500 and it runs really hot, but it has been on for probably 2 weeks straght now, and I have had no problems whatsoever.

im sure it'll be fine, anyways found something interesting, u can buy notebook coolers which ididnt know existed lol, and not sure if they are worth it or not

It will be fine. You can leave it on just like a desktop. As for electricity, a laptop will suck up very little juice compared to a fat desktop and big ugly monitor. the insides heat up just the same way as a desktop, but the form factor is much smaller. As for routine maintainence, on both desktop and laptop, a can of air will work wonders to help circulation and get prevent dust buildups on the fans and vents.
