So, yeah, I dropped a heatsink on my processor. A big Zalman one. I dropped it on the top of the processor, the silverish part that's visible when the processor is plugged into the mobo. Now it has a nice scratch.
That thing is just to transfer heat, right? Will a small dent/scratch in it do anything besides maybe affect the effectiveness of the heatsink to pull heat off of the CPU?
The computer still boots up by the way, and I haven't noticed any issues so far, but I'm thinking ahead.
Advice?
probably not, a dent or a scratch? did you apply the thermal paste? if its small the thermal paste should fill it up

I can't decide if it's a dent or a scratch, but either way it *appears* to be pretty minor. I did put an extra tad of thermal paste there and my temp is idling at 30?
So am I correct in assuming the metal plate on the processor is just for transferring heat and won't affect its functionality?

It shouldn't, ive seen some pretty messed up stuff done to cpu's and they worked fine.
Just check your temps every now and then.
If you can post a picture of it.

If it's scratched/dented badly you should try sanding down the surface. But seeing that you're idling at 30 degrees it's probably all good.

Try sanding it like diduknowthat said. That should get rid of any holes, and provide better temperatures than an brand new one
Otherwise, like also said above, thermal paste should do fine. 30C is an great temperature!
