motherboard upgrade

Hello all,

I am going to update my cpu. It's an old athlon xp 2700+, so therefore going to a newer processor will be a new chipset so I'll need a new mother board also. I have 2 gigs of corsair ddr2 and an agp 7800gs.

What I need is the best agp motherboard out there with the fastest possible processor ability. I know some will say agp is obsolete now, but I love my card . Also, I don't really care about staying with amd, so intel chipsets will work too.

I recommend that motherboard, Socket AM2 with AGP.

Is biostar a good manufacturer? I'm always sceptical because I've had some duds in the past.

Also, what's the fastest cpu that will fit this board? Sorry, I know nothing about cpu and motherboard Combining.

ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 -PT880 (Quad Core/Core 2 Duo) AGP8X/PCI-E Socket 775

Will allow you to use your AGP card and also has a PCI-E slot for a future upgrade of Graphics card. It also supports Core 2 Duo's and quad core if you like. Down side is that it only has a max of 2 gig of memory and its likely to be a jack of all trades solution hence its backwards compatibility, but supports quad core so its wont exactly be slow lol.

I'd rather go for the cheaper board with no pci e because when I do build a new computer I'll be buiding it with entirely new components. The first recommended board ooks good to me with it's two ide slots.

Now, I'm pretty sure I'm going with the first recommendation

What is the fastest processor I could run efficently on this motherboard?

Its your call, but considering core 2 duo's are similarly priced to the am2 variant and are noticeably more powerful and energy efficient. The saving of $20 doesn't make sense. If like you say you are going to do a build from new in the future you could drop a decent core 2 duo in or even quad and use it in your new build! Just my 2 cents i am no expert, go with what you think will serve you best.

good luck with the build!

ps both of the boards have 2 IDE slots.

Yeah the 2 ide ports was a big factor. Now if I did choose this board, what is the intel equivalent to the am2 6400+ windsor? Also, what do I have to watch out for in terms of the motherboard bottlenecking the cpu?

You would have to get a different motherboard that is Socket LGA775 to use an Intel Intel Core 2 Duo processor. But I am curious also. Is the Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Allendale (2.4 gigahertz) equivalent to the AMD 6400+ Windsor?
