Problems with mobo (i think)

So i have a ASUS P5VDC-X mobo which worked great. Then i decided to clean the parts, removing dust and such so i removed all the parts and when i put them back the computer wont start. When i try to turn it on it gets power (the CPU and PSU fans start spinning) but then instantly turns off (fans stop spinning).

I tried plugging in the PSU in another computer and it works fine, as does the CPU so those are fine. The RAMs are ok aswell so i came to the conclusion that the mobo is at fault. I can not figure out what it is. The only clue i have is that fter i had cleaned it and put back all th parts i had a Jumper left over but after hours of trying different stuff it doesnt work so i figured it was nothing important.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong or is the mobo damaged because of static electricity? (Note that i didnt use any protection against the latter because i havent had to before).

EDIT: I read some other guys thread (the "no power" thread) and i basically have the same problem but i dont have a case, actually i havent used a case for maybe one year with this computer and it still has worked fine until now.

How do check if the mobo is fried?

EDIT: I also read something about shortage or something, what is this? Im not too high on hardware ^^.

Make sure the motherboard is not touching the case anywere at all, check the edges. Also maybe you misplaced a brass standoff? Those are most common.

Brass standoffs? What are those? My english technical terms are not at their best ^^

Also i dont have a case, i just place the motherboard on the open side of a cardboard box so its resting on the edges.

EDIT: I tried some things and it worked! Yay! Or so i thought...

Apparently i have to have the 4 pin thingie close to the processor plugged in. Without the computer boots but i get no screen. So i guess i have to have it plugged in, but then my computer wont boot . Any ideas?

What are the specs of the system, like the psu?

The PSU has 650 watt or something.



The computer has worked great before i cleaned it, with the same PSU and smae parts, so i dont think its a power issue. I tried using the PSU on another computer so dont think its broken.

Checked all your connections? Also do you have the little brass stubs you mount the motherboard to the case with? if you do put those under the board so that the board isn't touching anything

I have tried resting the motherboard on pencil erasers which someone else here suggested so it isnt touching anything.



And i still dont have a case.

i had a similar problem after cleaning my pc and it turned out that the pc was shutting down after 3 or 4 seconds because the cpu fan wasnt running fast enough and the bios was set to shutdown in that situation so what i did was put the cpu fan plug onto a system fan header which allowed me to boot and get into bios so i could alter the settings then i put the cpu fan back on the cpu header on the mobo, it works fine now .

p.s im not sure if doing that was a dangerouse thing and i was just lucky but there you go.

This along the same lines as what meanman is saying. If you pulled everything out, what about the cpu/hs&f. Thermal paste? Proper HSF attachment? Sounds like an overheat problem.
