Size problems after Table Deletion

I am relatively new but here is a problem:

Background:

I routinely download MainFrame VSAM files into Text format and import them into Access. Each file contains 100,000+ records, with record length of 700 bytes. Therefore each file is approximately 75-85 megs and growing. This file grows by about 1000 records a week and I download it each week.

Needless to say the database is large (approximately 100 megs).

Problem:

After three or four weeks I delete the the previous tables, but the database size does not decrease. My latest DB was about 900 megs before I was forced to delete and start over.

Question:

It seems like Access isn't releasing the data after I delete the tables. Is there any way to refresh the DB or clear the associated memory of those tables?

Compact your database. Then re-check the size.

Look up compacting in your Access Help, its very important.

That made a huge difference!

I thought compacting was like Zipping.

I really appreciate the help!.
