PSU efficiency in pre-built systems

I have the hp system in my sig



im guessing that the power supply that came with the system isnt top of the line, but my question is



can a new PSU (i got my computer aug. 2005) improve the energy consumption of my system as to save me a notable amount of money over a year?



so in other words, would a new PSU pay for itself by its efficiency, or am i just foolish to think that PSU's have improved that much?



my current PSU is 350W but for the moment i cannot provid any more details because my gfx card died (that's why im considering a new psu, so i can get a nice gfx card)

It can, sure. Realize that your average computer costs less than $10 a month though, in electricity cost, and that that the replacement PSU would need to be pretty high end to get an efficiency rating that allows for at least modest improvement in power waste.



I wouldn't bother buying a PSU for solely that reason though. Many case PSU's are not very good however, replace it because you need the extra current/wattage, or because you are worried about reliability..

Well, your average OEM PSU will probably have between 65% to 70% efficiency, while a highend PSU will have over 80% efficiency. So I guess you should be able to see a difference in the long run, but I wouldn't buy the better PSU just to save money.
