Need help choosing new PSU

Hi, I have a emachines amd athlon 64 3200, 2 gb ram, and just ordered a new E-geforce 7600gt card. My power supply says ATX, 288 max and 15amp at +12volt rail.....I need some help picking out a new power supply to fit in my computer and run this graphics card, since I might be a little short on power the way it is, even though i dont do any gaming right now...Thanks for any help...

The first thing to look at is price range. eMachines throws in the lowest end stuff in their prebuilt systems. You will want a good 430w or higher while it may easily run on something like an Antec 380w supply. A heavier supply can later be used in a newer system or maybe a custom build while a good average case will see between 430-480w for the basics. thanks, i know i want at least a 350w, with 18a at +12v rail, but I didnt know if their was something else to look for as in connections and fit....i di read the good and bad list, very informative...what about this one...money is not an issue, not sure what to expect to pay for what i need, can i get something under $50 or more like $100????

too bad it wont run a geforce 7600gt......... I already have a cheap 300w...need something at least 400w, and 18a at +12v, min....thanks



Ok, out of those three, 2 will run this card, the rosewill is only 10a....but those prices are nice, but the sunbeam isnt on the good or bad list......so is it just a cheap psu, i would rather spend the extra money on something good, unless someone can speak for these.....thanks

Those supplies seen at those links are all low end garbage. Rosewill for sure. Just go back and take a good look at ceewi1's sticky I urged him to finish some time back to see some the good reliable makes and models there. Lately ceewi1 posted a link for a Corsair HX520 model that would more then adequate for the high quality model with energy saving features.

That was seen having a great special for a low price if I can relocate the site again. It was seen for $80.99 at http://www.clubit.com/product_detail...mp=OTC-fr00g13 newegg has it priced for $119.99.

All junk. The Rosewill model is rebadged Deer, who make some of the worst PSUs you're likely to find. I never included Sunbeam when I originally wrote the list because the Nuuo series were actually quite good and reasonably well priced. Since those are no longer available, however, I've added Sunbeam to the "bad" list. Not something I'd recommend. The 300W Hipro you mentioned earlier is OK for the price, but not really good for the system in question (more something I'd use as a replacement in an older system, or in a very lowend PC with integrated graphics).

As for units I would actually recommend, there's a lot in http://www.computerforum.com/90117-c...endations.html. The HIPRO HP-E4009F5WR and Ultra / X-Connect V-Series ( XVS) / 500-Watt both represent good 'bang for the buck' units, and either would be quite sufficient to power your system.

If, as you've said, you want to spend a little more on a much better quality unit, the Corsair VX450W is superb and would give you a bit more upgrade headroom as well.

When you eventually move up from the eMachines case there remember to look over the sticky ceewi1 did an excellent job preparing. You'll find it quite helpful when looking for a higher end model later.
