fan only comes on at startup

i have a gateway mt6704 laptop and the only time the fan is on is when i first turn on the computer and after that its always off. i looked in the bios for any type of fan control and i looked everywhere in vista to but i couldn't find anything at all. i also tried searching here for info and i also tried google but could find nothing.

BIOS/CMOS

Get in there (DEL, shift, F1, F2, F10)

Go to Hardware Monitor (or something similar),

Then disable the software.

Hope that helped

For clarification, don't hit DEL, Shift, F1, F2 and F10 all at the same time. Wait for your motherboard screen to load, and it will say which button to press (it should be one of those that oscaryu1 said).

i went into my bios and there is nothing there so is there anyway to do it through vista. if i was on xp witch i am used to useing id just go into power options and change the power scheme to home/office or always on. so is there a way to do something similar in vista or is there a program i can use to disable it (already tried speedfan).

thanks for the replies so far.

After bootup, does the fan stop turning completely?
A friend of mine has an FIC mobo with nVidia chipset and AMD processor, and the Cool n' Quiet stuff. The fan runs at full speed until Windows loads, then it slows wayyyy down to almost nothing. The idea is that the fan is supposed to speed up when the CPU is at full load for a while, but it should never stop spinning totally.

Then you probably can't change it. Is your computer overheating? If not, then don't worry about it. The fan is probably temperature controlled, and only throttles to full speed at start up.
