Please help, can't use my external hd for storage...

When I plug it in to my usb port it appears in device manager but it does not show up in my computer or is not in the "send to" drop down menu. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Frank

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I have used this drive before, as recently as 2 weeks ago and have stored some files on it.

Try this but instead of format, try assigning a drive letter to it

Thanks Cromwell, but when I click on disk management the only disk that is showing up is my c drive and the cd rom drive. Please advise.

Does it still show up in device manager? If not try a different USB port if it does I'll keep looking and see what I can find.

Yes it shows up in device manager and when I double click on it it says it is working properly.

The drive itself might be dead then.

If you can open the enclosure up (not the actual hard drive, just the plastic case or whatever it's in) try checking to make sure it's still connected right. If it's a sealed external drive try unplugging it from the USB/firewire port, reboot your computer then plug it back in
