Getting Data off of a Hard Drive

I need some advice on getting data off of an old hard drive. My OS went bad and I am trying to get our picture files off of our laptop hard drive onto our desk top hard drive. Can I pull the data off of my laptop hard drive even if it doesnt have a OS on it?

My laptop was running XP and my desktop runs Win95.

Any suggestions?

If the laptop drive was formatted in NTFS then you cannot use your desktop to get the data. Windows 95 cannot read NTFS drives.

If I buy a new laptop with Vista--can I then pull the data off of the hard drive using a cable adapter??

Yes. You can use any other XP machine as well if you have an adapter (or drive enclosure) and if the drive is still readable.
