I got a Packard Bell external memory drive a while ago but it recently short-circuited one of my laptops (which is now only useable through an AC source not the battery) and now cannot be seen by my other laptop. The power source to the drive is working as an LED flashes red and green when it is turned on but you cannot hear the general whurring noise it used to put out, but now more of a stutter when on. I am concerned about taking it to a preofessional to recover the files as there are some rather personal photo files on it of an ex of mine, so I was wondering if there's any way to recover it at home without formatting it first?

Thanks for your help.
