RAM Amount

I plan on building a gaming rig soon, with a resonable budget. How much RAM should I plan on getting if I'll be using a decent/good MB with an intel chip?? 2 gig, 4 gig??? Thanks guys.

My desktop has 8 gigs of RAM, if you are running XP, then I suggest 3GB, if Vista x86, 3GB or if your Running Vista x64 then I suggest as much as you can afford.

what? i've never heard of needing eight gigabytes, god. i have 1.5, and i have never ever needed more even when running oblivion maxed.

when have you ever needed more then 2GB of ram? its simply not necessary to have more then 2GB for the moment, and definetely not more then that in xp

I have 4GB RAM and I doubt I'll be having any problems in the near future.

Indeed, I picked up 8GB for $200 (A-DATA RAM), not a hardcore gamer, I play games such as GTA SA, DiRT and Test drive unlimited. So I thought id just max out my motherboard and future proof myself. Vista runs really quick with 8 gigs also, idles between 8% and 12% usage.

8GB... What ever lol.

Anyway, I would say if you can afford 4GB then do so, because it will needed in the near future. Crysis asks about min 2GB ram to play normally. If you want more, you need to have like 3GB ram. But for normal use, I think 2GB is just fine.

i plan on maxing out my ram, but since thats only 3.25 GB i think i'll stick with 2 untill i find that my performance is slipping so much that i leave my computer. its the same method i used with my current computer, and if you'll notice for that reason im still using a 754 mobo lmao

Well i said in the thread that im building a gaming rig so this tip isnt useful. I will be running high graphics and processing intensive tasks so i certainly wont be purchasing 8gig oh cheap RAM (lol 8gb for $200).

As for the other posts, I do plan on getting Vista, as it is the newest PC OS but i dont think ill get the x64. Ill probably end up getting 4gb of dual channel ram if money permits. It will help my gaming and overall performance.

Thanks all

Normally I would say 8GB is overkill (which it is), but RAM is extremely cheap so I don't see a reason why it's a huge deal. On Newegg you can get 8GB of somewhat high-end RAM for under $300, or mid-ranged RAM for under $200, since you can buy a 2GB stick of RAM for about $40.

I have 4GB of RAM, I think 8GB is overkill, but like OMEGA has said, it isn't that expensive.
