How much space do I need?

I want to convert a whole cabinet of CD'S onto a External Hard Drive. How much space would you recommend?

It depends on how full the CDs are, if you figure 700MB/cd just find how many CDs your have you can roughly figure out how much space it will take. You might need more than 1 drive if you have a ton of CDs.

Thanks! That is not a bad idea.

How are you encoding them? Compressed or Lossless?

I'm guessing I would probably encode them to mp3.

I say get 2 1tb hard drives and not have to worry about it
But seriously, one song is 5mb, 14 songs an album, so roughly 70mb per album.

High quality MP3s run around 70 to 100 megabytes per an album depending on how many songs and how long the songs are. If you are using FLAC or OGG, then you will use the full file size.

Count your CDs, and just rough estimate each one will cost you about 100megs and then go from there.

Oh music CDs, I suppose I could have assumed that or asked... In that case tlarkin is right, you can assume about 100MB/CD.

Yeah, I'd say 100MB as the high estimate. Realistically, probably only about 60 per CD, with 128kb/s encoding.
