I just got my new Iomega Minimax HDD and when I got it setup, its only reading 465 gigs! Its supposed to be 500gigs! Im formatting it now to see if that helps, also, it was out in the cold on my porch for a little while and was freezing when i got it plugged in, would this cause it?
Nah, thats correct.
Basicly one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, kilobyte=1024 bytes, etc, but the hard drive companies measure it as 1000 kilobytes so 500gbx1000mbx1000kb= 500000000/1024/1024=477gb.

its called advertising
people will probably be more likely to buy a 500gig hard drive then a 477gb hard drive.
just like studies have shown people will be more likely to buy something if it costs $19.99 instead of $20.00 (hence the reason most prices end in .99)

I've a "500GB" Seagate w/ approx. 465GB of storage capacity. So yeah, that's correct - unfortunately.

Depends which version, but it's not the interface speed that determines how long a format will take. Thats why you just use a quick format for a new drive.
