36gig 10,000rpm-boot up time?

hi there



well im thinking of getting the above drive for my c/drive to run vista off however i will also be using my 160gig sata to store my videos and music on.



can you tell me how much of an increase in boot up time and general program speeds will be noticed?



i was thinking of getting a 500gig 7,200rpm 16mb sata drive but that is far to much storage space to warrant spending the money so ive decided to go for speed.



whats the point in space when i will never fill it?

A 36GB raptor wont make much difference if the 7200RPM drive is somewhat new. A higher capacity raptor like the 150GB model would give you improved loading times though.

yeh the 160 gig is not even 6months old...



but its 8mb and the rapture is 16mb cache

so there wont be much difference in boot up time and system files/programs?



if not i will opt for a bigger 7,200rpm drive

In random reads the raptor will easily be better but for loading programs and what not it tends to be sequential in which case higher density platters can make up the difference in spindle speed. When you said 36GB raptor I just assumed it was a 36GB, 8MB cache, 10000RPM vs a >250GB, 16MB cache, 7200RPM drive (oops ). If you were looking at any higher capacity raptor (74GB or 150GB) then I would say the raptor would be much faster. But since the 'high capacity' drive you've got is only 160GB I would still give the edge to the raptor. I don't think it will be a big margin like with a 74GB model but it should still be noticable.



If you got a 500GB, 16MB cache drive I would think it would be comparable to the raptor in sequential reading, random reads still goes to the raptor though.

i used to think that capacity is always better, the more space the faster



unfortunatly there are still people out there that think the same, i had to guide my sister towards another laptop as she seen 120gig hd and thought it was better than a one with a 80gig but double mem and more cpu ghz.

Well, more space is faster than an otherwise identical drive. But you are right that the other specs of a system do a lot more to determine it's speed.
