This is a very common error seen with external hard drives. The circuitry in the drive could have failed. The actual hard drive itself could be in the process of failing.
Most important thing to do is stop using the drive now! At any time, the drive could crash on the platters holding the data and destroy the data.
You can contact ReWave Hard Drive Recovery (they are a data recovery company)- they do not charge an evaluation fee and their price is very affordable for external drive recovery.
Good luck!
