which is better? 2x 512mb or 1x 1gb
If your MB support Dual Channel, 2 x 512MB is better. If not, get one stick of 1 GB is cheaper

It also depends on if you are planning to get another 1GB stick later on. If you want 1GB now and are just waiting until you can afford 2GB then a 1GB stick now is better.

Basically what everyone else said. If you have a dual-channel ready motherboard, then buy 2x512MB only if you don't plan to upgrade to 2GB shortly. If you do plan to, then buy a 1GB stick and buy another one later on.

No, the timings will differ. You can buy a dual channel set if you want to be sure, or you can just buy two DIMMS of the same exact make.
