performance will suffer. if you want to use ide hdd, get two ide hdd and buy a sata cd drive or get a pci - ide i/o card.

But will it work.
I just want to test my new build, and make sure everything works.

Let me know if the above will work and not damage my board
thanks

You can put any PATA drive on the ribbon cable, just make sure you set master/slave properly or it wont work (it wont damage it either though).

Why not get this for $7 more? It is SATA 300 with a 16Mb cache and 160Gb storage.

No I already own those old Hard Drives I listed.
I'm building a new pc and I bought everything except for the Hard Drive.
Now I'm going to run to the store and buy a Sata Hard Drive.
1.
Is SATA-3G the same thing as Serial ATA-300 ???
Look at the specs of my Mobo, link above.
What should the Hard Drive I buy say on the title ??

Yes you can put a hard drive and optical drive on the same IDE channel (cable), but performance will go down pretty drastically if you are either copying files from the optical drive, playing a game, watching a video, or doing anything else with both devices.
You could invest in an IDE-to-SATA adapter.
