Temporarily connect an internal drive...?

I'd like to copy my 100GB drive onto my new 250GB drive before I reformat the 100GB and install XP on it. I don't have any room in my case to mount the drive while I'm copying to it. This is probably a stupid question, and you probably will tell me to step away from the computer, but can I connect the drive and set it on an anti-static mat while the copy is in progress, then disconnect it and set it aside?

thanks...

Don't even bother with an anti-static bag. I've heard the outside is actually one of the worst place to put drives. Just dangle the drive, it'll be fine
