Can i extend the size of my partition

I had two partitions on my new hard drives - however i didint need them so i deleted one so have about 50gb of free space not doing anything - can i add this on to my current partition to make one big partition, or will i have to have it as 2 partitions?

You don't add unallocated space to an existing partition. But you can sssssstretchhhhh the current single primary out to fill the 50gb gap you now have. If you have a cd/burner installed on the system there you can download a free tool just right for this called GParted. You will also need a program like the free BurnOn cd/dvd burning program that can burn iso images onto cd-rs.

GParted live for cd version 0.3.3.0 is the latest platform independent version. Make a note on that since the newer releases require Linux experience in order to work with those. You can grab that free at http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=173828

There are a few points about GParted you will to know before first trying it out however. 1) it boots up to the main gui after several prompts where you keep pressing the enter key. 2)Once you click the apply there it's final unless you press the reset buttom fast. 3) To get familiar with how it looks review some screen shots seen at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php

The fast way to the main gui is to simply press the enter key at each prompt and leave everything at the default settings. When you see 24bit with the option for 32bit leave it at 24bit. When you see 1024X768 default with the choice for 1280x1024 leave at 1024x768 so you can see everything on one screen! The experianced Linux user would be better at changing any settings there.

The C drive will be seen first as "HDa1" On the right side of the explorer bar is a dropdown list of hard drives installed. You simply highlight the one you want to reisze and click on the center increase arrow. The before partition number you want at 0mb. The space following the partition you want to shrink. Once you have the before and after at 0mb you simply clcik the apply button. This will take 20min.s or longer so plan on it.

When going to use GParted to replace the disfunctional XP Pro to Vista upgrade when couldn't add XP Pro then reinstalled on a sata after Vista went on the second ide drive I spotted where the XP Home installer had left some 8mb unallocated at the back of the primary ide drive. GParted was used to expand XP there to see that corrected fast.

The 0.3.3.0 version loads the fastest. The newer versions need a mount for the newer "start x" feature for auto configuring the display detection feature. On a live cd and not run off a hard drive? 0.3.3.0 works! Resizing or moving an existing partition still takes time however. Go for a coffee, tea, or a walk or something when that goes to work there.
