I did something to my HD

Hi, not long ago I had baught an external hard drive...It worked fine until I decides to take out the hard drive and try to install an OS onto it by hooking it up to one of my computers a a secondary HD(since i couldn't find another way). I used an Install CD(winxp) to do this, I was going through the installation i had chosen to have it formatted in NTFS, it formatted than began installing windows.

Than after not much longer i get file write errors so i figured it was my CD driver and quit the installation, now my HD from my external HD mysteriously does not work, when I hook it back up to the external box and try to use it windows detects it, gives me the name and that it's a storage device than say's this device is installed and ready to use(as ussuall) But no drive shows up.

It might of been a partition I put on it before i began installing it but i'm not sure, when I had gone back into the windows setup and tried to install it told me there was a partition on it that I must deleat, but when I tried to deleat it nothing happenned.

Is my HD dead? Thanks for any help!!

Ok i went into Computer management(Tidder helped me with that) and tried to delete/add a new partition, no matter what i would never finish formatting, it would just say "this device cannot be formatted" Than I chose a smaller partition size (30gb isntead of 70) and it gave me the option of formatting in Fat32, which I did, and now it works. Can anyone explain to me why this happened? Thanks for any help!
