ok so i have an A8AE-LE aka asus amberine m
so i read the manual, and i put memory in a0 and b0 both same brad, make, model, cas latency completely identical, and those are the only two. when i ran cpu z it still said i was running it in single mode, im wondering if i have to change any of the bios settings to i guess enable or get the array up and running....

I wouldn't go by the CPU-Z program. Upon first booting the system press the DEL key or other like F4 depending on HP's setup for the board there and enter the advanced areas of the bios setup. You are looking to disable the HP logo at post time.
Once choosing the save and exit option and restarting the system watch the post screens carefully. You can even press the pause/break to halt the system in order to read the screen. You should see "dual channel mode enabled" there.
Don't go strictly by some software on that. Once you see what mode the board is in if you halted the system simply press the enter key to continue booting the system.

ok so success i got the dual channel to work with the 1 gig memory, now whats better, 1 gig running dual channel or 1.5 gig running on single channel?
also if a memory is double sided and the others are not does it matter, they are all pc3200 all 512.

You should have them all single or double sided, they don't normally play nicely together. I'd take 1GB dual channel over 1.5GB single.

With the same speed ram the only time 1.5gbs of single channel would be better than 1gbs of ram running in dual channel would be if you were using more than 1gb of ram and start using your virtual memory.

The main idea behind having a dual channel mode is to open a secondary channel to direct background apps and services there in order to free up the primary for games and apps that use more memory. This prevents the normal services from impeeding any large app or game you want to run.
Mixing two different memory types is the recipe' for disaster. Having single sided dimms installed along with dual sided can see problems even starting up a system. The fact that they are all 512mb won't matter. When going from two 512s to three for the increase the better move is to go with two 1gb dimms of the same type and speed to see the increase applied in the dual channel mode. If you are planning to upgrade to Vista that is the advice now seen often.
