I'm not sure about the CD Drives, but I had my HD's vertical in my last PC and they ran great no problems at all.

hmm... cant you just put it inside the case? would be much safer for the disk (or are you using it as mobile HD? )

My first computer I modified I added an extra HDD from my old dell to my Compaq, and there was no room for the extra HDD so i left the side panel open, and the HDD hung out the side of the case by the wires. It ran like that for over a year no problems haha.

The problem will be if you bump them and any type of metal comes into contact with the PCB on the bottom of the drive. It will more than likely short something out, and then your drive is pretty much useless.
