Maxtor 160Gb HDD into Compaq... Probs

Hi there all... Problem as follows:

Currently have a Compaq Presario AMD2400. It has a 40Gb Hdd with a spare slot and plug. I bought a Maxtor 160Gb Hdd and attempted to install it today. The system went into a boot cycle so I checked the BIOS. The drive is there, I ran the auto detect and all the information appears correct. Still the computer wont boot. A friend told me I may have to cap the size so I put a jumper in that slot. The BIOS now sees the drive as 35Gb but still it won't boot. I have the 160Gb set as slave.

Could anyone suggest what if anything I could do to get this up and running...???

Thanks in advance.

Blue.

Is there a chance that the primary drive is a WD? Just because I've run into a similar problem on one of my machines with a WD 40GB and a Maxtor as a slave.
