I have a portable HDD from Ovation. It is connected to my laptop via a USB cord. There is no power off/on button. As soon i plug it in the power LED lights up.The problem is that i cant stop it by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware'option.I get the message:"The generic device cant be stoppped now. Please try again after some time".
Will directly removing the USB from the laptop damage the HDD or my laptop.
How should i go about it?
hmm, make sure all application that are using the drive have stopped, close all windows (including any explorer windows) that are using the drive.
Also you may find that the indexing service may be accessing the drive, try shutting that down

Turn off write caching (optimize for Quick removal) - this solves the problem most of the time.
Right click your drive, Properties > Hardware Tab > Select your External HDD and click Properties > Policies
Hope this helpls
