Help with wireless media

Hi, im in need of some help as i have been looking for a while on how to complete my task.

Basically i bought an Acer AMD 2.2 Ghz, 120gb, 1gig ram, laptop the other day. It also has vista home premium and has built in wirless .It is charging at the moment.

Upstairs i have a custom built desktop which consists of a 3.2 Ghz AMD processor, 80 gb, 1 gig ram. The operating system for this is windows XP. On the system, iv got about 40 Gb of media files. The mp3's are not on itunes and are just sitting in folders, likewise for films.

I connect my desktop computer to the internet via a Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway, which contains 4 Ethernet ports on the router.

What i would like to do is make my desktop as a sort of media server, and therefore holding all my media files so i don't have to clog up the laptop.

But how can i connect my laptop to the desktop computer via wireless, and enable me to view the media files on the desktop and play them on my laptop. Is there software i need to stream the video and music files on to my laptop? Also is there any specific hardware and peripherals i need?

Any help would be appreciated
