Computer wont recognize External HD

I recently purchased a western digital external HD for music and media files. When it plug it in to my computers USB port it recognizes that new hardware is being added, but then says it can not find the driver and needs to connect to the internet. Even after connecting to the internet it will not recognize the drive. (system runs windows XP, AMD 1.6GHZ processor and 1GB ram). If I plug in other flash type drives it reads them no problems. I hooked the HD up to an older computer and it recognized it right off the bat. Why is my new computer not seeing this drive and how can I get it to recogize it? I have even downloaded the drivers and utilites and loaded them on the computer, but still no dice.

Please help .....

Have you gone into the controlpanel/administrative tools/computer management and then click on disk management and see if its shown there if it is it may need to be formated or assigned a drive letter on your pc

go to WD's website... select your HDD and download the proper drivers... if you have trouble with that... come back...

he already downloaded and installed all drivers and software goosy22.

South1011, do what codeman0013 said. if you bough it from a private seller it might have been Mac formatted, therefore it won't recognize anything.
