External HDD Problem

I have a Western Digital External 200gb HDD.

This morning I encountered a "semaphore timeout error" or similar when attempting to open it.

I then rebooted and upon rebooting, my computer wasn't able to access the hard drive. It recognises it as a device, but will not allow access of the actual drive - the drive letter has disappeared. The drive is powered and working and all cables are connected.

How do I fix this? Is it a case of reinstalling the device? I tried uninstalling and it didn't seem to make much different. I haven't been able to test my HDD on another computer yet so I don't know if I've lost everything,
