Because its a different drive. Norton ghost can only be used if the image is being used on the same hardware as it was created on.

So if you make an image from the sata, it can only be installed on the sata.

I highly doubt it since its not the same drive type.

And even if it did work, if your putting it in another machine with different hardware, then it wouldnt work.

i got norton to back up my sata drive to an external ide hard drive but norton wont find the drive on boot up to restore the image is my only choice to buy another sata drive if so would it have to be the same as the other sata drive ie size and make

Because Norton doesnt load USB/FireWire drivers for the external drive. And if you got an identical drive, you will be able to restore the image to it, but if the physical hardware is different on both the machines, then it wont work.

Cloning from one interface to another i.e. pata to sata (both are IDE drives)on the same computer or not is easy to do. I use EZ GIG II software. Put your cd in the a drive and boot from that cd drive, select your source drive and then you target drive. Care should be taken that you dont end up with drive letter assigned by windows. Change your boot priority in windows unplug your pata and boot off sata. That way your sata will be drive c: As long as your target drive is as large or larger than the source drive you will have no problems.
