DDR vs DDR2

what are the real advantages of having DDR2, it seems they produce alot mreo heat and the timings are alot higher. wouldnt this be bad? i dont understand the differences.

Their speed are much higher, say DDR667Mhz vs DDR400Mhz.

ok but what does that assist in? if their timings are lower arent they essentially slower than regular DDR

MHz are almost always more significant than timings.

1GB DDR333 @ 2-2-2-5 is going to be slower than 1GB DDR2 667 @ 3-4-4-8, even though the timings are alot faster/tighter with the DDR.

Timings are more of a "fine tune", running tighter timings doesn't mean your RAM is better. Now with equal RAM speeds, the one with tighter timings is probably going to win, but even a relatively "small" increase in MHz can make up for the "tighter" timings.

Also, DDR2 has significantly more bandwidth I think, which is always a good thing.

thanks 4w4k3 i was interested in this because of the new AM2 socket ocming out soon. how much of a difference its going to make, i also read a review on overclockercafe that showed very little increase in FPS during GAMing using DDR2 vs DDR, and i am a gamer so i wanted this information, thanks geoff and 4W4K3.

Thats because the RAM wasnt the bottleneck, most likely the CPU or the gfx card was... and RAM doesnt directly affect game FPS anyway, it assists in loading times etc.... The thing you want to look at on DDR2 RAM is its maximum bandwidth, it is excessively igher/faster than stabdard DR memory modules.

Higher RAM clocking = more bandwidth. PC2700 has less bandwidth than PC3200. The timings are how many clock cycles it takes for something to happen.
