Do you have another way of booting? (i.e., another harddrive with an OS on it). If so, then you can attempt to play with Data recovery software. Short of that, i would suspect the only option to be to consult data recovery specialists

That's bad... But at least did they tell you what happened to that harddisk?
You could have a chance if only the HDD's electronics got fried: just find a same model HDD, take its printed circuit and mount it on yours.
But if the problem is physical then unfortunately it's not much to do.

yeah, i stil can't find a same model hdd for the 40gb that crashed on my years ago. i'll probably just let it be, theres not much data on there anyways, just some videos that i can redownload again.

yeah...um...this is a long shot but it has been done. if the hard drive died and is making that clicking noise...keep in mind this is LAST resort. you can put your HDD in the freezer for about 30 minutes and if you can set up another HDD for a ghost...SOMETIMES the HDD will spin up long enough for you to get a ghost. there's a lot of shit on the theory behind why that works, but i can't explain in a short amount of time.

btw, i've never tried this. my boss did and it worked...other times it doesn't.

Bummer... if the data recovery people cant do it ... hmm either (a) they arent qualified ... did they tell you WHY they cant recover it? or (b) the drive is REALLY fried.

It抯 almost impossible to not be able to recover some data from that harddisk. The only way you can lose all the data from the HDD is placing it unshielded in a strong alterate magnetic field.
But if it抯 only a surface scratch on one or more platters or it抯 an electronic failure then you can recover some data inserting the platters in another (similar model) hard disk.
