Disc not recognized

I think my CD/DVD drive is shot, but I am hoping that somebody can give me a few tests to be sure before I attempt to replace it.



First off, both CDs and DVDs have been acting the same, so when I say CD, it goes the same for DVDs as well.



When I put a CD into the drive, the light blinks as though it realizes I put something into the drive. The light quickly (faster than normal) shuts off. No autoplay pops up. When I go to mycomputer, both the d: and e: do not recognize that there is a disc in the drive it says "please insert a disc". I have tried the disc in a different computer and it works perfectly fine.



i also have tried a boot disc, that had worked previosly on this laptop, that now does not work. this leads me to believe that it is not just a windows xp or software problem.



i have tried uninstalling the d: and e: drivers along with the secondary IDE channel and the SCSI Controller. All with no luck.



Windows does recognize that the device not only exists, but it also says that it is working properly. Obviously it's not.



I think that is all of the information I can give other than it is a Toshiba Tecra A4 running windows XP with the boot order 1)FDD 2)CD-ROM 3) LAN

4) HDD

Since it is a laptop and the drive is not a plug and play, i didn't try the drive in a different computer. I didn't recently add any hardware or software. as far as i can tell it just stopped working for no reason at all. It had been working fine a couple of days ago. So it wasn't like it was just installed and has never worked.

Doesn't sound too good. I can't think of any other tests you can try, other than replacing (That you haven't done). Have you taken the drive out and put it back in? maybe it somehow unseated itself? Grasping at straws right now...

I appreciate the reply. I haven't tried that. I suppose that will be my last test before I just get a new drive and consider the old one done for. Thanks for the help.
