What's a good dvd burner??

for the new conroe build i'm planning it's gonna be a media center pc so i'll be burning a lot of tv shows and stuff onto dvd's so i'll need a pretty good dvd burner. I have this one picked out:

PLEXTOR Slot Load 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model PX-716AL/SW - Retail at Newegg.com

but it's a little pricy... i've heard plextor is the way to go but i'm kind of going over my $1500 budget so i need to scale back on the less important parts... any other suggestions or is the one i have picked out so awesome that i should just spend the money on it?

Unneccisary IMO, as long as you don't get errors in the burn, all drives turn out the same quality. What you need is to buy high quality discs. Just get a nice Sony, Lite-On, or such in the $60-$80 range. (Not the cheap crap), but that, that's just overkill, plus slot loading is a major downside, I learned that one the hard way.

OUCH... If I were you, I'd look into NEC drives. I've heard good things about them. I've had one for a while with no problems, and I have a new one that seems to be working great.

Litescribe is a waste from what I've heard. That HP will do you just fine, I've used many HP writers with no problems whatsoever.

I'd just caution against installing any "Sony" software that comes included with it. I lost all faith after that rootkit incident.

When buying the OEM drive at a pc show the Sony model used here came without software. But the cd writers bought retail have always seen great results with the included B's Recorder GOLD that comes with them. The newer version now supports dvd as well as cd-r/rw writing. But beside burning software the thing to look at with drives is standards. The likelihood of bad media is more likely here however since many favor Plextor drives.
