Technically no because you do have to get around the macrovision/copy protection...

ya, me too i find that strange, but can't break forum rules! I read once here that when you buy a DVD, you only buy the permission to play it...so sorry, 'legaly' we can't help you

Yes, even for making backups of discs you own. The_Other_One is right. Getting around the copy protection scheme is simply illegal... even for your own discs.
