I have installed a Lite-On SOHC-4832K CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive on my comp and I've set it to Master (I got a standard CD-ROM drive as Slave). When I'm trying to load a CD, it gets extremely slow and my comp stops responding for a couple of minutes then do as if it was going to load then stops again, anyway you get the point. My CD-ROM drive works perfectly though.
So what's wrong? Do I have to install some drivers? And if yes, where can I find them?!
btw, I'm running Windows ME with no updates... imo that's probably the problem but we never know...
On some dvd drives along with cd-rw/dvd models a cd-r or commercial software disk will have problems. Have you tried a cd-rw or dvd-r or movie in the drive to see if the drive runs correctly?

How old is the CD Drive, look in your device manger under IDE Controllers and see if the cd rom is running in UDMA mode, If the DVD Burner is running in UMDA mode and if its new it will, the CD rom is running in PIO mode on the same IDE cable is can cause hangups

the dvd-rom drive is running in udma 2 and the cd-rom in mode 4... anyway, i've changed the cd-rom drive and now the dvd drive is working perfectly. weird...

The use of multiple type optical drives can be fun at times getting them configured correctly. Now that the dvd drive is working try switching the cd rom jumper from slave to cable select to see if that helps.

Actually both drives work fine now! Maybe it was just a bug from Windows ME ;P

Maybe that's one of the reasons why ME was a flop for Microsoft. But even with XP having better hardware detection and recovery processes some bugs still appear when optical drives refuse to read certain medias.
