I need a guide to converting an internal DVD writer to an external one for use with my laptop via an enclosure. Can anyone provide me with some links to enclosure guides? Is it actually cheaper to do this (say with the cheapest DVD writer drive) rather than buying an external DVD writer?
i may be wrong, but i dont think they make an enclosure for optical drives

Yes, they do. I'm not sure as to the comparitive cost, particularly in the US, but i've definitely found it to be far more versatile. The process is relatively simple and the enclosure will come with a guide.
The inside of the enclosure will have both IDE and molex power cables, that simply plug into the drive. On the outside will be a power connector (which plugs into the mains via an adaptor) and a USB/firewire plug (which plugs into the computer). Just set the jumper on the drive to master, plug it in, and go.
