question about dvdr's and how much they can hold

when a dvd r says 4.7gb and can have 120min. of mpeg2 what does that mean? i know most 120min videos aren't 4.7gb, because a 20min video is about 60-80mb, but all i know is that those are in avi and wmv. well anyways, my question is if i got this, or any dvd r, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1117177899144

will i be able to hold 4.7gb of a avi/wmv/mpeg video, or only 120min. of it? i hope its 4.7gb.

120 minutes is just the average for those DVDs sort of like VHS tapes can hold 6 hours on SLP.

DVD's hold 4.7G(aside from duel layer) That is that... You can load any type of video on them, any compression rate, etc etc, but if you want them to play on a DVD player, they MUST be MPEG2 and withing the standard settings. Typically, the most you could fit on a DVD and still have it play in a standard DVD player is around 6 to 8 hours. Highest quality, you'd get about 1 hour... Well, this is how my DVD Recorder works.

another question. can you also play cdrs/w on dvd players? do you have to make it mpeg2 for it to be able to play in the dvd player? thanks

If the DVD player can read xvid and mpegs, then no converting is needed. But if it cant, and most cant, then you will need ot make it a vcd

well although they have a theoretical max of 4.7gb there is the option to overburn, whereby forcing a little extra on the disc, but the amount that can be overburnt depends on the media

k, i just found an avi to vcd converter. but it has the logo in the front that says the logo because it's the free version. -_-. Anyone know of a free avi to vcd or mpeg2 converter that doesn't show the logo in the middle of the video? thanks

anyways, its still converting and i'll see if it'll play on my dvd later. i put an avi and mpeg video in a cd r and put it in my dvd player and it says it's unreadable, guess i can't play avi's or mpegs on mine....

edit: ok, so i converted my avi to vcd and it didn't work on my dvd player. I know that my dvd player can play vcd's because i've watched them before. i used the program called winmpg video converter. so can anyone please help? all i want to do is make a way to convert my video files to a cdr/w and make it be able to play in a dvd player... ahhhh please help...

thanks

A 4.7 gig DVD really means 4.35 actual but it's usually better to keep them in and around 4.3 to 4.33 so that you aren't burning too close to the outer edge of the disc. It's less likely to get damaged as easily.

VCD or SVCD can be recorded and played on most standard DVD players but with limited play time.
