Hello Everyone,
I hope you guys won抰 mind helping me with this project. Because it抯 somewhat costly I don抰 want to make a mistake. My question is in two parts:
1) I want to build a DVD duplicator using 7 lightscribe enabled burners. Each drive will need to initialize as a separate drive in order to fully use the duplicating and labeling software ?i>Droppix Recorder for Towers.?
First. I want to put seven ide burners into a duplicator tower.
Second. Connect each drive with a ide-usb adapter.
Three. Plug all seven usb adapters into a single usb hub.
Four. Single usb out to pc.
Will it work? Anything I need to look out for?
2) Anyone have any thoughts on these drives?

Well that sounds interesting.
1. What is the overall amount of cash you would like to spend?
2. I hope you have some real reason for the lightscribe, otherwise forget them, they are a pretty big waste of money IMO.

yes i dont like lightscribe either. just get a bunch of lite-on dvd burners with dual layer and youll be set.

I can get this done for $600-$800 depending on the drives and minus the software.
While painfully slow, my clients who only need short run production, the lightscribe drives give them an option to the more expensive replication and silk screening process. I don't want to give them DVDs printed on an ink jet. There are a couple of additional options that I am considering for short run labeling however considerably more expensive than the proposed duplicator.
What exactly is it that you don't like about the lightscribe enabled drives?

They just end up costing more. The drive is more, you need to use special dvds that cose more as well. and it doesnt even look that great.

...a that's the rub. If they look crappy, that won't fly. I've yet to see what these discs look like with the burned image. I've been waiting for a company to send me a disk so that I can check it out. Haven't recieved it yet. Maybe they're not too impressed with the image either.
Does anyone have any thoughts on my duplicator config. I know that it's pretty straight forward and a simple design but frankly I have never patched these many usb items into one hub before and since they all need to run simultaneously I want to be sure that the os will recognize them as separate drives i.e. drive(s) f,g,h,i,j,k,l and m respectively. Is there a problem with this assumption?

ok i def see where your comin from with the lightscribe idea. i do alot of video production for random people (ie weddings, birthdays, grads, occasional commercial, etc) and i knwo how important the professional look is and the lightscribe def shows that much much more than a sharpie or an injet printer. i like the idea of hte light scribe but heres the real question....it sounds to me like you plan on making lots of copies for a single client at a time....and like people have already said the light scribe discs are not very cheap....i actually do have one in my other editing rig and i use it for people who want that extra look...but i tend not to be making mass copies....so it stays sort of a special option for people....if you are doing these dvds in big enough quantities might it be a good idea to see how much prof screen printing for dvds would cost you? when you do it in bulk it could save you alot of money....and if you factor in the cost dif of the lightscribe dvds vs. mass quantities of regular dvds you could save more and end up with better results....again thats just my opinion and i dont know what kind of numbers youre goin for production wise....also on the dup rig....sounds like it might work....i just dont know how sure i am about that usb hub setup.........i mean hell its worth a shot i guess..but ive never done somthin like that before....let us know how it turns out cuz it maybe added to my project list
