Drives won't open

Hey guys

Alright so I just finished putting together a nearly brand new compy. New GFX card, PSU, motherboard, modem uhhh, yeah okay so that's pretty much it. Anyway, it was a huge hassle. First my old motherboard didn't fit into the new case and then the screws were too short and then I couldn't find my heatsink and blah blah blah x_X But I'm done! Or at least I'd hoped I was ;_;

I'm having trouble getting my CD and CD/DVD combo drive to open. From the looks of the cables and what my startup screen says, the wiring and jumpers are fine. When I press the eject button I think I can like, almost hear the tray struggling to come open but it doesn't even move. My first thought was that I put the screws in too much, because I needed to buy pretty long ones. But I don't know about the inside of drives so I don't know how likely that idea is ^^; Remember, everything is new. I need the drive so I can install my beautiful, extremely expensive parts x_x Help, please?

Is it possible that something is somehow stuck in the drive preventing it from opening?

In any case, there will be a small, circular hole on the front of the drive. Get a paperclip or something similar and push it into the hole. This will release the drive tray slightly, and you can pull it out with minimal force. Make sure nothing is stuck in the drive, and then try using it again with the button.

P.S. Best to do this while the computer is turned off.

i have had the same problem with my old CD drive. I had to use a paper clip, straighten it out, and push the paperclip threw the hole in the front of the CD drive to force open it.

The bios says the wireing's fine, but have you actually checked it?

Hey, thanks for the help everyone. But as I suspected, it was the screws. I remember wondering why they were becoming so difficult to get in xD Yeah so I just had to loosen 'em up a bit and they're both opening smoothly ^__^

Hah, interesting fix... I assume they weren't the ones that came with the drives?

They must have been big screws to actually interfere with the drive tray! Glad you got it fixed, and next time, best to use the screws that come with the drive
