Does the device at least read the contents of the dvd? If not, search online for instructions on how to set the jumpers on the device/install it in the machine properly, etc.
Also, you may indeed need drivers. However, if so, the device should have come with a driver cd, and sometimes they include software for playing dvd's. I know Windows Media Player should play Dvd's without having to download any codecs (assuming you're on Windows), so get the newest one (10 I think) if you don't have it.
