ok.. when writing cd-r, everything goes find but after it has been written, the disc is empty and nothing is written.
however, cd-rw works fine, no problem in writing cd-rws.
im using samsung combo drive sm348d
com is hp p4 2.6ghz 512 ram 80gb hd using win xp
tried maxell 48X cd-r but couldnt work.

youre probably better off using cd-rw anyway, they might be a bit more expensive but you can just wipe them clean and use them again, where with a cd-r you cant!

i have bad experience with samsung optical drives, i don't wanna go near them again, the one i had was 100% crap

I've got liteon drives. they are great. one of my friends has a drive that works with dvd's and not cd's. also kinda weird. He couldn't figure out anything to do but use a different drive.

try a firmware update, have a look on manufacturers site to see it there is an updated version?

I had similar experience, try setting the CD-r writing at a lower speed, say 24x usually this solves the problem.

well if you don't get yours to work you could always get one of these, it's what I have and I LOVE IT!

as supremo said above, adjust the write speed. usually the disk will say on it or the packaging how fast it can be written onto. do not exceed this speed. go lower than the speed stated on the disk to be sure.
