Is blue ray burners/media out yet?

Is blue ray burners/media out yet? I heard you can store 20 gigs on a single layer and 50 on dual layer...If there not out yet , whats the planned release date?

Well, according to Computer Gaming World, the technology is still in the final stages of development. And it's a collaborative effort between Apple, Dell, LG and various other companies, so a wide range of compatibility. Furthermore, small correction on the capacities...

1 Layer - 27 gigs

2 Layers - up to 54 gigs

Multi-layer - up to 200 gigs

Plus it also is projected to increase the read time on drives from the current 11Mbps to 54Mbps!!! This is going to be great!

Yea, it's going to be real great , but think of the price of the media and drives.....just normal dual layer disc cost about 6 bucks a disk , the price is prolly going to be unreal...

thanks for the info

I think it's already available in Japan (as usual). I have lived there for five years and I can tell you that you never know what technology is before you come to Japan.

yes at first the price of blue ray will be high but after a few years will problebly see a large price drop. Look at DVD-R prices now, back when DVD drives first came out a DVD-R cost $50 each and look now going as low as .20 each.

Stay away from Blu-Ray. It's transfer rate is only like 35.5 mbps, where as you have Dual-Layer, with 16x it is 177.7 mbps. Plus with the multi-layer, you can get a lot more data on a disc.

What are you talking about? Any way Blu Ray burners are going to apear in stand alone devices at first, but who knows if we'll see it in computers. Besides, HD-DVDs are going to have a new protection on them, so I'm sure they'll have some thing more than CSS on BD-DVDs
