No sound with DVD

I downloaded a movie of a game (zelda), it's an .avi file. but when I try to play it on my computer with windows media player I get an error (I don't know how you say that in english) with the question send or not send error information to microsoft. then I get this: "An unknown error has occured in A Filter (IVIVIDEO.AX), made by InterVideo, Inc." I don't have an dvd burner but I can bun the movie as a video-cd and play it on my dvd player but when I do that I have no sound

There are files called codecs that tell the computer how to play video files. If these are missing or broken they will cause errors like the one you describe. Find out if you have broken codecs using this free software called Sherlock. Let me know the results.

these codecs are missing:

Video codecs:

DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor

VP61?Advanced Profile

Windows Media Audio V2

Thanks for letting me know. You can replace those codecs from downloading files from various sources. There are "codec packs" that are around which give you bundles of codecs - you want to avoid them if possible. Here are the links to the codecs that should repair any damage..

DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor

Windows Media Audio V1, V2

VP60, VP61

If you run Sherlock again and there are still problems, let me know and we'll go to the next stage.

Good luck.

I agree - I have a codec pack installed myself, but the fact that you need to know what you are installing means I wouldn't recommend using them without prior knowledge.

Dark Master, if the codecs are still being reported as broken, download a program called Codec Sniper, and remove any codecs in the list which have "broken" by the side of them, and then try and reinstall the codecs stated above.

Make sure you leave any others - Codec Sniper has the potential to do great good - but great harm if you remove the wrong thing.

Sherlock now only reports that these codecs are missing:

VP60?Simple Profile

VP61?Advanced Profile

and codec sniper says all codecs are ok, I still can't play the video file

Let me get this straight...

You deleted the broken VP60/61 codecs - reinstalled them, and they still don't work???

OK, here's one last roll of the dice. Download AVICodec, which is a program that detects what codecs are needed for a video file. Open the video file with the program and post what it says at the bottom.

If that doesn't work, try playing the file with the codecs (VP60/61) removed completely. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped!!
