Old CD/RW

I have this old TDK cd burner from my previous computer (sorry I'm not specific, but thats all I know about it) that my parents would like on their new dell 4700. Could I hook this up to the Dell or would it give me all sorts of problems because, well (it's, a dell) ...I don't think it would, I just don't want the parents to get angry at me

you'll be fine. Most Dells have the jumpers set to cable select, then just attach to the same IDE cable the other optical drive is on.

Well I finally got around to installing it. The burner works great (rewrites at a whopping 12x lol), however my system does not recognize the original DVD drive. I'm sure there's an easy way to fix this, I'm just not sure how

what is the original dvd drive? Another dvd burner? DVD Rom?

You could try uninstalling the drive and rebooting, you O/S will reinstall it. Also double check your connections, make sure nothing is loose.

When I bought the dell 4700, it came with one DVD Rom drive. This is the one It will not recognize. Everything is plugged in, the drive opens/closes but it will not load anything because only the cd burner is there.

Hmm still not recognizing it. I'll play around with it a little more, if you have any other suggestions that would be great

what are the jumper settings for both drives?

Hey Flip ,

I checked the jumper settings for both drives, and the CD/RW I just installed is set to Master, and the Original DVD Rom that came with the dell is set to CSEL.

The thing that confuses me is, is that on the DVD drive it says CSM (which I assume is CSEL, SLave, Master) and right underneath it says "SLA", and I'm not sure what that is about.

If these jumper settings are incorrect, could you tell me how to change them? I may be a little slow, but I couldn't figure out how to do it just by looking at it and was too afraid to try

Try installing them on different data cables. Some mother boards don't like 2 DVD or CD or a combination of both over the same IDE controller.
