Another "CD-Rom not Accessible" Question

Being my first time posting, I would like to thank anyone for considering my problem. I have found numerous threads on this subject; however, nothing unique to my particular problem. I have in possession a crappy used machine that is running win 98. I wish to use it soley as a library for audio files. The CD Rom functions flawlessly when executing programs; however, when inserting a burnt cd, I get a message of " D: not accessible (heard this before?) It currently has Nero media player (which I am unfamiliar with and am considering replacing) I have updated codecs and even went to the extent of updating the OS and directx. What else might it be? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Can you give a model for your cd rom drive. Or at least around how old it is. Some really old cd drive cant reads burnt cds.

The only info I have on the drive itself is that its "generic". But its age may very well be the culprit. I expect that its at least 6 years old.

There is a lesser known speed specification of CD media called "Multispeed" and encompasses media rated from 4X to 8X (not all 4X media is Multispeed and rarely is it labeled). Older drives arent able to read these media so well (anything rated higher than 8X is an extension of Multispeed)
