monitor aspect ratio

What is the difference between 16:9 and 16:10? How do I know if a particular 22" monitor is either?

16:10 is 10 vertical pixels for every 16 horizontal pixels. 16:9 is 9 vertical pixels for every 16 horizontal pixels. I think almost every 22"W monitor is 16:10, but to check, divide the vertical pixels (likely 1050) into the horizontal pixels (likely 1680). If your answer 1.6, then it has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

1680/1050 = 1.6; 1440/900 = 1.6; 1280/800 = 1.6; etc.

Almost all 22" Widescreens are 16:10 and that goes the same for almost all 20" widescreens.
