Hi, I just installed a BFG 8800gt in my computer and I have been reading alot about a bios update for fan speed control. I can't figure out if I need to update my card bios. My current bios version is 62.92.16.00.00 and the new version is 62.92.00.18. Is my bios newer or do I need to update? Also, Is it hard to update the bios on a video card, or is it like updating the driver just a easy download? I won't destroy the card will I? I didn't even realize they had a bios lol.

Does the fan speed fluctuate? If not, you need the latest BIOS. Alternatively you can use something like Riva Tuner to control your fan speed. I use that and set it to 50-60% fan speed.

Well I played cod2 for about 10mins and the temps showed 70c on ntune with the fan at 29%. does that sound about normal or is that too hot? I dont know what a normal operating temp is when playin a game on a card like this. I just upgraded to this from a ati x700pro. I must say WOW though I got maxed out on cod2 and no lagg at all. The card idles at 50 to 60c but I don't have the side panel on my case at the moment I don't know if it will be hotter once I put the panel on. I saw the speed change one time but every other time I look its at 29%. Should I do the bios upgrade or should I just use ntune and kick the speed up to 50% and leave it there? I don't want to mess up my card doing a bios upgrade?

Those two BIOS versions seem different, the one that you have now is a 10 digit number, while the second BIOS is only an 8 digit number. Let alone the "new" one has a lower number, which almost always means it's older.
I wouldn't go messing around with flashing the video card's BIOS, as it requires special BIOS flashing tools to be loaded on a floppy (usually). And if you fail it can be a huge pain trying to recover it.

Yeah on bfg's website it only give a 8 dgit bios version that's another reason I didn't know if I had the newer one or the older one. I really don't think the fan control is working though every time I check itin ntune its 29% even in game. I don't want to fry the card. I'm going to play cod4 for an hour and see if that speed changes. If not I think I will try the bios, if it gets screwed up I hope I can just take it back to best buy and get my money back. I already had to take the fan sticker off so it wouldnt get caught in the fan. Having my doubts about this card!

does 50-60c sound about right for idle on a 8800gt 512mb? Highest I've seen it get in game was 80c but I only played about 15mins.

Those are fine, they can always be lower but as long as the card doesn't overheat and crash the game I wouldn't really worry about it.

Thanks for the help and the pics. Will doing that keep the fan at 50% all the time or will it allow it to adjust when it needs too? I can change the fan speeds already on ntune. I tried to download riva one time before ,and when I restarted it shot all the fans up to 100% all the time on my hp computer. Made it sound like it was going to explode lol. Same thing happend when I tried to install speed fan too I thinks it's because I have a hp.
