1 What means AGP? - accelerated graphics port

2 What means PCI? - perpheral component interconnect

3 What does PCI-E mean? perpheral component interconnect express

4 What’s the difference between AGP, PCI and PCI-E? they use different interface and different bandwidth/speed from slow to fastest - pci,agp,pcie

5 Who are the pioneers in this area? pcie

6 Who are better, ATI or nVidia? no one is better

7 Is an expensive card just as good as a cheap one? you get what u paid for

8 What does ‘onboard’ means? mostly it will used your system ram rather than its own onboard dedicated ram

9 What are ‘onboard’ video cards? these are built into the motherboard to cut cost.

10 Is there a difference between ‘onboard’ and not? yes, try to avoid onbard unless you are really on a budget and generally not for gaming.

11 What means VGA? video graphics adaptor

12 What means SVGA? super video graphics adaptor

13 What’s the difference between VGA and SVGA? * VGA = 640 x 480
* SVGA = 800 x 600
resolutions
14 Which "standards" have been developed? * VGA
* SVGA
* XGA
* UXGA

15 What’s the difference between these "standards"? * VGA = 640 x 480
* SVGA = 800 x 600
* XGA = 1024 x 768
* UXGA = 1600 X 1200

16 what’s DirectX? DirectX is a collection of APIs for easily handling tasks related to game programming on Microsoft Windows. It is most widely used in the development of computer games for Windows.
17 What do DirectX 9.0-video cards? recent and newer cards support it

18 Why are there so many different types of video cards? there are different types of motherboards for different types of user need. older mobos are still around for purchase so there will be people with older graphic interface.

19 Can you use each type for each aim/goal? yes

20 What does one mean with ‘Pipelines’? Similar to the way a CPU has a pipeline filled with small stages that each do a single task quickly, so too does the GPU in your video card.

21 What do ‘Pipelines’? this is like asking number 20.

Doesnt a pipeline draw 1 pixel? because a pipeline can only do 1 task per clock, and the amount of pipelines indicates the amount of pixels your grafics card can draw per clock.

how can you tell the difference between a pci slot and a agp slot?

Was this answer helpful ? Yes No
rhyno

Pci-express, is the longest slot, you cant miss it .

AGP is as big as a pci slot, however, is further away from the backside of the case. and usually the pci slots are white, while AGP usually is brown

Jeffrey-beginner: you could have just read the sticky, Video Card 101.

it answers most of your questions and then some.

DAMN! That's alot of ?'s lol. Yes I agree, have a look at the sticky.

To clarify (if I can) mot AGP cards will have a "latch" mechanism on th right side of the slow, which locks in the card. PCI cards do not have thes, so tht is a distinguishing mark you can look for.
