Startup Problem (Graphics card)

I just bought an ati x700 pro (PCI Exp) to replace my old graphics card. I followed the instalation instructions and the card is working, but turning on the computer is the problem. I push the start button and 99 out of 100 times the graphics fan goes full blast, besides that it sounds like a normal startup except there is no output and the processor light is solid. After this i cant use the power button to turn it off. I have to unplug the pc and whenever I plug it back in 99% of the time it starts up automaticaly locks up again. Sometimes I get lucky and get it to start up, and it runs fine. What is happening? How can I fix it???

Sounds like a PSU problem. Try finding a spare PSU, plug that into your computer, then boot up and see if that happens.

PSU? Power supply? There is a power supply in the other room. Wouldnt it not be a power supply problem, because it will work, once you get it started. Maybe I should use the power cord to the card instead of just having it plugged in?

Wait, there is a power cord to the card??? Was it plugged in originally??? If not, plug it in, that will prbly solve the problem.

Your X700 probably needs more power so try to connect its power cord ( http://www.ixbt.com/video2/images/x7...p-complect.jpg ) to your power supply..

Its that cord on the left..

K... hold the phone. Do you power off your PC regularly but hitting the power button on the tower? Also if you unplug your computer while its running there is no surprise that its coming on and locking up. This is very bad for your PC to pull the plug and you are lucky that its coming on at all.

Also if you are hitting the power button every time to shutdown your PC then don't because this is also a bad thing. Sorry if this is not what your doing but it sounded as though it where and I've seen others shut down their PCs this way.

Edit:

Sorry I did it agan . I missread and now see you said turning on your computer. Anyhow dont pull the cord if you can help it as its a crap shoot wether your going to do big damage to your PC. Rather hit the power button on your power supply if it's got one (this is not great for the pc either)
